The journey to digital economy

Recently, the digital economy has grown strongly in Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam, three times faster than the GDP growth rates of regional countries. The digital economy has fueled economic growth in Southeast Asia amidst global economic uncertainties. The digital economy is a new concept, so standardized methods for measuring and calculating it are not yet available globally. According to the Handbook on Measuring Digital Economy by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), three different levels must be distinguished: the core digital economy, which includes products and services of information and communication technology (ICT); the digital economy, which consists of the core digital economy plus transactions conducted via and based on online platforms (some organizations only consider transactions via and based on online platforms); and finally, the digitalized economy — the application of digital techniques and tools to economic, social, and political activities to enhance their efficiency.
